Interns work Monday – Thursday (22 hours per week). Below we provide an example week with the Youth Conservation Corps! These examples are all based on real activities past cohorts have done. Please note projects, tasks, and field trips vary each year.

Monday: Restoration Project at White Center Heights Park
Wear your YCC t-shirt, protective pants, and closed-toe shoes. We will be busy at White Center Heights Park improving upon an existing restoration site by removing Himalayan Blackberry, which is an introduced plant in western Washington.
Details
- We will start the day with a fun icebreaker before moving onto a plant ID activity at our restoration site.
- Next, we will review important safety tips and then share an overview of our goals for the day.
- Time to work! We will assess our progress before cleaning up for the day.

Tuesday: Project at Parks Nursery
Prepare for another day of working with plants and dirt!
Details
- Prepare for another day of working with plants and dirt!
- We will get a tour of the nursery and learn about the nursery team’s efforts to grow important native plants for restoration projects.
- Together we will pot bare root trees to prepare them for future plantings in the winter, maybe at one of our restoration sites!

Wednesday: Field trip to Woodland Park Zoo
Details
- Wear some comfortable shoes for a day at the Woodland Park Zoo.
- Zoo staff have prepared an engaging day learning about different conservation efforts happening at the Zoo and with their partners.
- You might get to hold a Western Pond Turtle, tour a pollinator garden, and learn all about Zoo Doo!

Thursday: Virtual Day
No commute today! We will be meeting over Zoom and leaving time for independent work on your creative projects.
Details
- We will explore different writing forms about nature and the environment.
- We will talk about scheduling an informational interview with a Parks employee.
- The last hour will be spent working on your independent project.
- Fridays are off! Back at White Center Heights on Monday!
